From June 24th to July 8th, 2017, students in the English MA and BA toured England with Dr. Ryan-Bryant and Dr. Sands-O'Connor. The trip's group included Garrett Busshart, Jill Custodi, Sheree Grant, Kanika Haggins, Alissa Kowalski, Jessica Lauer, Quiana-Joy Ochiagha, and Jillian Walkowiak. Having done preliminary work in Dr. Ryan-Bryant's "Archival Research Methods" course in Buffalo, students participated in a second course, "Race, Literature and the Archive" that took them to Newcastle (Seven Stories archive and Bloodaxe Books archive), Manchester (the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre), Liverpool (the International Slavery Museum and Speke Hall), Birmingham (the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Cadbury's chocolate factory), and London (the George Padmore Institute Archives, the Black Cultural Archives, and the British Library). Students also met with author Alex Wheatle, and participated in several walking tours and events expanding their understanding of Black Britain.
