Dr. Barbara T. Bontempo received her Doctorate from Indiana University, a Master of Science Degree from Purdue University, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto.  A full professor of English/English Education at Buffalo State College, Dr. Bontempo received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006.  Courses most recently taught include: Young Adult Literature, Introduction to Literary Analysis and Interpretation, Ethnic American Literature, Futuristic Fiction, and the graduate courses: Teaching Literature, and Children’s Literature: Science Fiction and Fantasy.  She has been involved in all aspects of middle school and high school teacher preparation at BSC and has extensive experience in the supervision of student teachers, as well as in service learning partnerships.

Her areas of scholarship and research include young adult literature, creative drama, service learning,and family literacy. Her publications appear in the NCTE journal, ALAN Review, the NCTE Standards Consensus Series: Teaching Literature in Middle School: Fiction (1996), and other professional journals including: The Leaflet, The English Record, Contemporary Education, Childhood Education and an Indiana University Press publication on Service Learning (2010).
