A proud New York City native and first-generation university graduate, Joey Nicoletti has taught at Buffalo State University since 2012. He has taught such classes as Advanced Poetry Writing, Introduction to Creative Writing, and The Craft of Writing, among many others.
Joey is also the author of 10 poetry books, most recently Breakaway (2023), Fan Mail (2021), and Boombox Serenade (2018). His Pushcart Prize-nominated poems, essays, reviews, and articles have appeared in numerous magazines, journals, and anthologies, including The Rumpus, The Adroit Journal, and Drawn to Marvel: Poems from the Comic Books. Joey’s debut nonfiction book, Extinction Wednesday: A Memoir, was published in 2024, and he is the Reviews Editor of Voices in Italian Americana (VIA).
In addition to English classes, Joey also teaches in the College Writing Program (CWP) and the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Summer Academy, where he has been selected for a Buffalo State Faculty Appreciation Award and as the recipient of the EOP Faculty Merit Award for outstanding contributions to the Educational Opportunity Program through student and/or staff support.
Above all else, Joey strives to ceaselessly inspire, support, and encourage students; he aspires to learn from them as much as they might learn from him, in the hope that every person he is blessed to work with will complete their Buffalo State coursework successfully, not just to graduate but also to use their higher learning experiences as starting blocks for creating the lives they imagine for themselves.
