Tim Bryant (he/they) is Associate Professor of English at Buffalo State University. A former librarian and computer consultant, Dr. Bryant enjoys helping students achieve their academic, creative, and professional goals. He has supervised numerous independent studies, internships, special projects, and graduate exams in his areas of expertise.
Tim teaches classes in American and Native American literature, speculative and weird fiction, creative writing, and film. In the classroom, he balances critical analysis and close reading with creative and game-based exercises to inspire active learning. His innovative teaching and course design have won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Modern Language Association’s Humanities Innovation Award.
Tim’s research areas include cultural studies, game studies, and popular fiction. He has published articles on the Cold War origins of tabletop gaming, game players as protagonists in real-life politics, and the ethics of play in wargame simulations. He is currently writing a book about rhetorics of play in the quest narrative.
